Dream Rug

Community Art
2018

The original idea for this project draws inspiration from the Finnish traditional rug-tapestry and the Japanese Omikuji, which are random fortunes written on strips of paper found in Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. In the Omikuji tradition, the fortune bearer ties the strip of paper to a tree or wires to retain good luck.

In this community art project, participants wrote their own dreams or dreams on behalf of others on strips of rug fabric. These dreams were made available for anyone to read, fostering a sense of hope and well-wishing for others. The portable artwork was showcased in various locations throughout the year, including forests, community halls, and restaurants.
